How To Do The Impossible

On July 20, 1969, NASA’s Apollo 11, landed the first two humans on the moon. Mission commander Neil Armstrong’s first words from the moon were breath-tak ing. All over the earth he was heard saying, “That’s one small step for (a) man; one giant leap for mankind.” This was a dream come true! John F. Kennedy had envisioned this, and had spoken before a joint session of Congress, on May 25, 1961, about landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth. Although President  Kennedy did not live to see this breakthrough in space exploration, his belief and Armstrong’s action, serve as an example, on how to achieve the impossible.

Man landing on the moon, is an indication that a lot of the things some of us think aren’t possible to accomplish, are indeed possible. As Nelson Mandela once said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” So how does one turn impossible into possible? You do so by asking and acting on the following three questions.

Why are you here?

We are all born with a purpose! Hence, once you can live the answer to this question, your life will be lived with more meaning and fulfillment. Having a “why” to live for, will provide you with laser-like focus and will inoculate you against distractions. It will also provide you with the strength to stay the course, when the going gets tough, and when you start to think about giving up.  As a matter of fact, if your “why” is powerful enough, your how will be easy.

Where are you going?

Once you have identified your “why,” the next step is to find out, “where are you going?” This means identifying the job to be done. It involves setting goals, writing down your ideas on paper, and deciding what you want to accomplish, in the next three to five years. This is where a lot of people put limits on themselves, by setting goals that are easy to accomplish. It is important however, during this process to think big! Think about some audacious goals, goals that will stretch you to get out of your comfort zone. As you do so, bear in mind, that even if it has never been done before, it’s still possible!

How will you get there?

As you think about your dream or your goals, remember, that there is no wealth in an idea! The wealth is found by acting on the idea. Hence, you must take action. So create a plan, develop strategies with timelines, on when you want to accomplish your goals. Get help! The services of a coach, therapist, mentor, or someone who can provide you with the support you need, is an invaluable resource. Always remember, that the way to get to the top of a mountain, is by climbing to the top. Your dream is still possible and you can achieve the impossible!
