Once the first surge of romance has passed, most relationships lose their sparkle and passion. Of course, this reality does not signal the end of your relationship but if you don't do something about it, you can quickly become strangers, and problems can surface. So check out our 20 top tips to enable you to reconnect with each other and put some life back into your relationship.

1. Kiss each other

It's one of the most intimate things you can do with your clothes on; it will help maintain and build the romantic bond between you and your partner.

2. Leave notes for each other

Get a pack of sticky notes and write little messages you can leave where your loved one will find them. Of course, we're not talking about ones that say: 'Remember to take the bins out.

3. Go away together

Sometimes, it takes some distance and time away together to remind you how much you love and enjoy each other's company. So get someone to look after the kids and get away for a night or weekend, where you can do fun things together that you can never do at home.

4. Have a power cut

Imagine that the juice is cut-off for a night. This "power-cut" means no TV, no music, no lights: just you, your partner, some candles, and conversation.

5. Date each other

Arrange to meet somewhere, arrive separately, then pretend it's the first time you've been together. Then, find out about each other again - tell stories about when you were young. This process will remind you of what you used to see in each other.

6. Talk to each other

Turn off the TV and have a chat. Talk about stuff you both like - movies, books, cooking, anything as long as you talk. Communication is one of the most significant parts of a relationship, and not talking will cause you problems.

7. Say thank you

We always show gratitude to strangers and people we work with, but it's easy to forget to do the same for our partners. A small gesture of thanks, whether saying; thank you for cooking a nice meal or just being there, will make a big difference.

8. Make time

We all have busy lives; evenings can evaporate with lots of chores or work. Hence, set aside 10-15 minutes to spend together daily to find out how each of you is doing.

9. Have fun together

Remind yourselves what you used to enjoy doing before you got bogged down in the humdrum nature of life together. Play games together, go out walking - do whatever it was that used to make you feel alive and happy.

10. Say 'I love you'

Those three words tend to fade away as relationships progress, but telling your spouse, "I love you," can boost the relationship. Also, try saying I love you by sending your lover a text or email during the week.

11. Pay each other compliments

Tell the other one how good they look, how lovely a shirt or top looks, or even the choice of footwear. Compliments make everyone feel better.

12. Laugh

Humour is good for your health, and sharing jokes makes for a better bond. So watch a comedy movie together, look at old photos of yourselves or do anything that will tickle your funny bones.

14. Make love more often

The more time you spend together in the bedroom, the better it will be for your relationship.

15. Spend some time apart

This recommendation may sound a bit weird, but allowing each other time and space 'to breathe' is just as important as spending quality time together.

16. Make yourself happy

If things aren't going well in your relationship, look at yourself and how you feel. Now try and do some things to boost your self-confidence and mood. If you're happy, it will rub off on your partner.

17. Flirt with each other

Flirting is what relationships are built on at the start. Then, as we get older and spend more time together, flirting stops being important. So why not start it up again? It doesn't have to be much - just something small that makes your other half think, 'Ooooh!'

18. Dress-up

We all know how easy it is to stroll around the house wearing old clothes that aren't sexy and inspiring? So make an effort! Put some nice clothes on, even if it is to sit and eat dinner with your lover at home around the dinner table. You may suddenly see each other in a different light.

19. Buy a present

It doesn't have to be expensive, but a token that means something to your beloved.

20. Touch each other

Hold hands, touch each other's arms, have a hug, and do anything that means that you stay in physical contact with each other. Non-verbal communication is just as important as talking in a relationship.
