A breakthrough is an “aha” moment and the act of overcoming an obstacle that permits the achievement of a particular goal. It is simply, turning the impossible into the possible. Finding your breakthroughs, is necessary therefore, if you are going to thrive in any area of your life, be it in business, relationship, health, career or finance. Here are three steps in finding your breakthroughs.

Step 1: Decide what you want

The only way to get what you want is to first decide what you want. In the process of deciding what you want, ensure you know exactly why you want it. As a matter of fact, let your why be to realize that goal for the benefit of someone you love and who is depending on you for the result. People who have often gotten what they want, have often said they did it for someone else, such as a parent, child, spouse or someone they love.

Step 2: Develop a strategy

A strategy is a plan of action designed for the achievement of your set goals or objectives. Generally, when you are met with an obstacle, it’s an indication, that your current strategies aren’t working and that you may need to become more resourceful. This may mean finding people who have achieved what you would like to achieve and ask them how they did it. You may also find the services of a mentor or a coach to be useful.

Step 3: Change your mindset

As a child growing up, my mother would often tell us as children, “belief kills and belief cures.” If your state of mind is seething in negative self-belief, you may be hijacking your progress and getting in the way of a breakthrough. On the contrary, the right belief system can propel you to new heights. Hence if you believe that you can, you are half way there. As Epictetus puts it, “First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.”

So in order for you to find your breakthroughs, decide what you want, develop a strategy and change your mindset. Whenever you meet with an obstacle therefore, rather than having a breakdown, make the decision to have a breakthrough.
